After a six-year hiatus, the enthusiasm was palpable, and the event delivered a vibrant mix of technical depth, innovation, and community spirit.

The PostgreSQL community reunites in Sydney
This event in Sydney was the first since 2019 after COVID struck. This provided an excellent opportunity to reinvigorate the PostgreSQL community in Australia.
With 75 attendees, sixteen sessions and 6 sponsors this was a wonderful platform to build on for the future.
We look forward to 2026 where the next conference will again be held in Sydney. We will then look to expand throughout Australia and New Zealand.
The PostgreSQL community from across Australia and New Zealand reunited in Sydney for the fifth annual PG Down Under (PGDU) Conference—a long-awaited day of learning, collaboration, and celebration of open-source excellence. After a six-year hiatus, the enthusiasm was palpable, and the event delivered a vibrant mix of technical depth, innovation, and community spirit.
PGDU 2025 recap: Key insights from Australia’s premier PostgreSQL conference
The conference opened with a thought-provoking talk by Thomas Munro, PostgreSQL Hacker and Committer at Microsoft. His session explored half a dozen PostgreSQL features, offering insights into the future of PostgreSQL architecture. Thomas’s talk sparked meaningful conversations and encouraged the community to think boldly and collaboratively about the evolution of PostgreSQL.
A highlight of PGDU 2025 was the diverse speaker lineup, which included several international experts, underscoring the global reach and collaborative nature of the PostgreSQL ecosystem. Their contributions enriched the event with fresh perspectives and cutting-edge practices.
One of the most memorable moments of the day was the interactive panel discussion, where attendees engaged directly with the speaker panel. The session was not only informative but also lively and fun—audience questions were rewarded, adding a playful and competitive edge to the dialogue and celebrating curiosity and engagement.
The PGDU organizing team delivered a seamless and well-balanced event, combining deep technical content with ample opportunities for networking and community connection. From hallway chats to structured sessions, the day was a testament to the strength and warmth of the PostgreSQL community.
Fujitsu's participation and presentations
Four Fujitsu experts—Nishchay Kothari, Peter Smith, Rajesh Kandasamy, and Vigneshwaran C—took the stage at this year’s conference to share their insights and expertise. Their presentations highlight Fujitsu’s continued dedication to advancing the PostgreSQL ecosystem and supporting the broader open-source community. This impressive participation once again reflects Fujitsu’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and leadership within the PostgreSQL space.
Regarding the talks, Fujitsu had the following line-up:
- Evolution of PostgreSQL job schedulers
(Rajesh Kandasamy) - PostgreSQL internals uncovered: Enhancing Logical Replication and introducing Columnar Indexing
(Vigneshwaran C) - PostgreSQL pgroll: Zero downtime, reversible schema changes
(Nishchay Kothari) - Tailoring CREATE PUBLICATION - A complete syntax guide
(Peter Smith)
For those who could not attend
We understand that not everyone was able to attend PGDU 2025 in person—but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the excitement and insights from the event. In the spirit of strengthening our community and sharing knowledge, we’re pleased to make available the presentation decks from our Fujitsu speakers.
These materials showcase the expertise, innovation, and practical experience our team brings to the PostgreSQL ecosystem, and we hope they inspire continued learning and collaboration across the community.

And looking toward the future
PostgreSQL Down Under 2025 reminded us why this community matters: brilliant technical exchanges, practical takeaways, and the kind of conversations that spark collaboration. Whether you were presenting, asking the hard questions, or helping behind the scenes, your energy made PGDU a powerful moment for the PostgreSQL ecosystem.
We’re already excited for 2026 — when PGDU will return to Sydney — and we plan to use that momentum to grow even further so that PostgreSQL knowledge and community support are easier to access no matter where you are.
We look forward to 2026 where the next conference will again be held in Sydney. We will then look to expand throughout Australia and New Zealand.
